San Luis Obispo, located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is one of the best cities for cycling in the United States. Although there are only 45,000 people in San Luis Obispo, the city was recently ranked by the League of American Bicyclists as a silver level bicycle friendly community thanks to its focus on education, encouragement, engineering, and evaluation. There are only eight cities in America with a higher overall ranking.

Residents can enjoy a wide range of recreational cycling paths throughout the city--from biking through historic San Luis Obispo to cycling through the Edna Valley Wineries--while also being able to commute safely thanks to having bike paths or bikeways on nearly every single arterial street. The city has also recently updated the Bicycle Transportation Plan and intends to spend another $53 million in projects for 31 miles of new bike paths and six major bikeways.

However, as with any form of transportation, there are risks involved while biking in San Luis Obispo. In 2006, there were over 50 reported bike accidents, including one fatality. If you want to stay safe while cycling in San Luis, the city has over 14 League Cycling Instructors offering bi-monthly Road 1 classes.

These classes will not only show you the basics you need for commuting by bike, but they will also teach you valuable lessons on avoiding bike accidents. A few things you'll learn include:

-Preparation: How to maintain your bicycle, use safety gear, and prepare for your ride so you can reduce your risk of a bike accident while cycling in any weather.
-Technique: Tips for changing gears, braking, and observation so you can ride safely on a regular basis.
-Cycling in Traffic: General instructions on the rules of the road and tips for avoiding bike accidents while riding in San Luis Obispo.

Although there are risks to cycling, it truly is one of the safest forms of transportation and is becoming more popular with each passing year. By following the rules of the road and practicing defensive riding tactics, you'll greatly decrease your chance of being in a bike accident in San Luis Obispo.

If you are ever involved in a bike accident in San Luis Obispo and believe you are not at fault, you should contact a personal injury lawyer for a free consultation. An experienced attorney specializing in bike accidents can help you assess, file, and win your personal injury claim so you can recover the full compensation the law and circumstances allow.
